Charm culture is everywhere—it’s hard to remember a time when they weren't a thing.
During the pandemic, a new group of charm collectors flourished—customers wanted something tangible to express their hopes, dreams, memories, loved ones, and more. If we went out and stores were open, we might head to our local jeweler to have a new charm welded onto a bracelet. Or we might buy a charm catcher—an individual piece that can easily be attached to our latest treasure on a beloved chain.
I don’t like dwelling on the sadness and confusion of those days (who would?), but jewelry still remains here as a reminder and an inspiration—it holds such profound power.
Post-pandemic, the vibe around charms has shifted dramatically. Now, they’re playful, nostalgic, and undeniably cool. We love them so much that we’re hanging them everywhere: on earrings, rings, and, perhaps most fittingly, on our bags.
Bag charms aren’t revolutionary, but their recent resurgence has taken me by surprise. Maybe it’s because my most stylish handbag is a diaper bag (in other words: not stylish at all). Or maybe it’s because I carry a crossbody phone case with a built-in wallet, so frankly, I don’t see a reason to carry a purse (although, now that I think about it, my phone case could use a bit of extra sparkle).
Regardless of my take on the current trend, I fully support finding more ways to wear jewelry—on our bags, on our phones, on our bodies, and anywhere else it makes sense.
