Emily Satloff, designer of Larkspur & Hawk, has always forged her own path. While her jewelry designs are distinctly inspired by history, her interpretations strike a delicate balance between the old (utilizing the 18th-century foil-backed jewelry technique) and the new (experimenting with unconventional materials as backings, such as lace and woven ribbons). This fall and holiday season is no different, as Satloff delves deeper into pairing ribbons and unique gemstone cuts to create striking color combinations and an entirely new category of jewelry design.
Incorporating ribbons into jewelry— a technique she introduced a year ago— has quickly become a signature of the brand. This ribbon embellishment approach is a modern innovation that sets her apart in the fine jewelry world, as it is quite rare. Unlike traditional antique jewelry without this feature, Satloff's use of ribbons brings a fresh, contemporary vitality to the vintage-style jewelry she’s known for, possibly marking an evolution of the foil-back technique that Larkspur & Hawk has popularized.
In her latest creations, Satloff uses embroidered textiles, ribbons, and silk grosgrain ribbons as backings. “As a jewelry historian and designer, creating this new collection has been cathartic for me, as I play the role of a researcher, drawing on my knowledge of decorative art history to select the ribbons— and beyond that,” Satloff said in a statement. “Though I’m not a jeweler, I gave myself the opportunity to get hands-on by curating the ribbons for this collection. I draw out the map of each ribbon and personally cut and place them before the jewels are set. It feels more tactile than some of our other collections. I love doing this!”
The new pieces, priced from $950 to $5,800, will be released throughout the fall and holiday season.
