On December 19, Chow Tai Fook Jewellery Group announced its comprehensive “Sustainability Blueprint 2049”, setting bold goals to lead the Chinese jewelry industry in environmental responsibility. The plan includes launching a line of products made with 100% recycled gold by 2025 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2049.
Key Milestones on the Path to Net-Zero
Chow Tai Fook is actively transitioning to operations with a reduced environmental footprint. Its commitments include:
- 50% reduction in overall emissions by 2030, as part of the journey toward net-zero by 2049.
- Decreasing the environmental impact of product packaging by 50% by 2030.
- Minimizing the use of harmful chemicals during production.
The company’s Director of Sustainability, Wu Huayu, emphasized at a media event in Shanghai:
“We aim to integrate recycled gold into more product lines, reducing reliance on newly mined precious metals. Collaboration with international and local industry bodies is underway to establish standards for recycled gold jewelry.”
Beyond Environmental Goals: Culture and Innovation
The Sustainability Blueprint encompasses more than environmental measures. It also focuses on:
- Establishing an international talent platform.
- Promoting Chinese culture through jewelry designs.
- Encouraging industry innovation and setting new standards.
Wu elaborated:
“Our blueprint is committed to increasing the circularity and traceability of materials while minimizing environmental impact. We will continue investing in talent development to enhance well-being across our supply chain. At the same time, preserving and promoting the richness of Chinese culture, history, art, and craftsmanship remains a cornerstone of our efforts.”
