Kathy and Hannah French, the mother-daughter founders of Seelye Designs, are redefining the jewelry-buying experience by inviting clients to participate in the creative process. Since launching in-person workshops in May 2023, they’ve hosted monthly events in their Brooklyn and Boulder studios, blending creativity and connection with a hands-on approach to jewelry design.
From Family Inspiration to a Thriving Business
The idea for Seelye Designs was born at the kitchen counter during the holidays of 2022. Named after Kathy’s great-grandmother’s maiden name, the brand is an homage to the women who inspire and carry on family legacies. Hannah describes the brand as:
“An ode to the women before us, those who inspire us today, and the women who will follow.”
Hannah, trained in fashion and lost wax carving, paired her expertise with Kathy’s extensive experience in fashion sales and management to bring their vision to life.
Lost Wax Carving Workshops: A Creative Breakthrough
Inspired by the success of “sip-and-paint” events, Hannah introduced the idea of hosting workshops where attendees could create their own jewelry. Their first session sold out within an hour, confirming the demand for hands-on, personalized experiences.
“Seeing our guests’ reactions was so moving,” says Kathy. “They were creating something meaningful and connecting in ways we hadn’t imagined.”
Workshops: Where Creativity Meets Community
Seelye’s workshops, now held at their Greenpoint studio in Brooklyn, allow clients to craft custom pieces using the ancient art of lost wax carving. From wedding bands to milestone keepsakes, participants create jewelry that tells their personal stories.
- Workshops cater to couples, bachelorette parties, and those celebrating special occasions.
- For those who can’t attend in person, at-home jewelry-making kits offer a similar experience.
“Our workshops link creativity and community,” Hannah explains. “They’ve become a magical way for people to connect.”
From Pop-Ups to a Permanent Studio
Initially, Seelye hosted pop-ups across various locations, complete with yoga sessions and chefs. Over time, the demand became overwhelming, prompting the move to a dedicated studio in May 2024.
“It’s grassroots marketing at its best,” says Kathy. “We meet our clients face-to-face, and they often return for custom jewelry.”
A Vision for the Future
Seelye Designs continues to grow as a brand that values both artistry and personal connection. With their workshops serving as a gateway to creativity, Kathy and Hannah French are fostering a community of clients who don’t just wear jewelry—they help create it.
