A brooch once worn by Jacqueline Kennedy during her time as First Lady sold for over twice its estimated value at the Freeman’s | Hindman Important Jewelry Auction in New York City last Thursday. Initially expected to fetch $6,000 to $8,000, the stunning piece achieved a remarkable $20,955.
A Piece of History in Gold and Emeralds
The brooch, featuring:
- A gold Grecian coin at its center.
- Surrounded by an 18k gold leafy wreath adorned with emerald accents.
This historic piece was accompanied by a photograph of Kennedy wearing it at a White House reception on April 19, 1961, held for the wives of the American Society of Newspaper Editors. The auction lot also included the book Jacqueline Kennedy: The White House Years.
A Record-Breaking Auction
Freeman’s | Hindman’s inaugural Important Jewelry sale achieved a total of $3.8 million, showcasing some extraordinary items:
- Top Lot: A platinum ring featuring a 10.89-carat round brilliant-cut diamond, with yellow gold infinity bands encrusted with approximately 6 carats of princess-cut diamonds, which sold for $190,500, far exceeding its estimate of $80,000 to $120,000.
Jackie Kennedy’s brooch was previously purchased at Sotheby’s Estate of Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis auction in 1996 and later owned by a collector in Lake Forest, Illinois. The auction lot included the original Sotheby’s box, auction tag, and catalog.
