Lucara Diamond Corp. has announced the names of two extraordinary diamonds recently recovered from its Karowe Mine in Botswana. After a nationwide naming contest involving over 39,000 Botswana citizens, the miner revealed the names on Wednesday, celebrating the cultural significance and geological marvel of these stunning gems.
Meet Motswedi and Seriti
- Motswedi:
The 2,488-carat diamond, found in August, is named after the Setswana word for “water spring” or the flow of underground water that emerges to sustain life. The name symbolizes vitality and abundance. - Seriti:
The 1,094-carat diamond, unearthed in September, translates to “aura” or “presence” in Setswana, reflecting deep cultural ties to identity and legacy.
A Celebration of Creativity and Culture
The naming contest, open to all Botswana citizens and residents, ran for two weeks starting on November 22, 2024. Entries were judged on:
- Creativity and originality.
- Cultural relevance to Botswana.
- Connection to the diamonds' unique characteristics.
Prizes for the Winners:
- Motswedi’s naming winner received BWP 100,000 ($7,324).
- Seriti’s winner was awarded BWP 50,000 ($3,662).
Both winners will also enjoy an exclusive tour of the Karowe Mine.
