Irish goldsmith and high jewelry designer Nigel O’Reilly has released a new book, Evolution of a Goldsmith, where he dispels myths about the jewelry industry and shares his unconventional journey to success. The book launched on November 21, coinciding with his trunk show at Bergdorf Goodman in New York City.
From Humble Beginnings to High Jewelry
O’Reilly’s story begins in County Mayo, Ireland, far from the fashion capitals of Paris or New York. Despite battling severe dyslexia and starting his career in a factory making medical molds, he discovered his passion for jewelry after creating a ring to impress his future wife. That moment set him on a path to study under legendary jewelers and work for brands like Van Cleef & Arpels, Fabergé, and Stephen Webster.
“I want to show that no matter where you come from, if you focus on your art and skills, you can achieve incredible things,” O’Reilly says.
Writing from the Heart (and the Pub)
O’Reilly wrote his book from his favorite pubs near his home, reflecting on the people and places that shaped his career. The book serves as a tribute to the mentors who guided him, including Rudolf Heltzel and Erwin Springbrunn, two of Europe’s finest goldsmiths.
Hollywood Glamour, Irish Roots
Now based in Castlebar, 150 miles from Dublin, O’Reilly’s work graces the collections of Hollywood stars like Saoirse Ronan and Julianne Moore. Specializing in colored gemstones, pavé settings, and 18k gold, he embraces the advantages of his remote location, from cheaper rent to serene surroundings.
“They’re proud of me here,” O’Reilly says. “I’m doing high fine jewelry in the last place people expect it, proving you don’t need a big city to succeed.”
A Lesson for Aspiring Jewelers
O’Reilly’s story is one of resilience, creativity, and gratitude. Through his book and his work, he hopes to inspire the next generation of jewelers to pursue their craft on their own terms.
