June 2024 — Michael Hill International Ltd., a prominent jewelry retailer, operates 300 stores across Australia, New Zealand, and Canada. The company employs approximately 2,600 long-term staff and is headquartered in Brisbane, Australia.
History and Growth
The company was founded in 1979 by Michael Hill and his wife, Christine, who opened their first store in the small New Zealand town of Whangarei. Michael Hill quickly gained national recognition due to its unique retail jewelry model, which featured distinctive store designs, a specialized jewelry product line, and nearly ubiquitous high-impact advertising. The company also received numerous international awards for its window displays featuring renowned brands like Bulova, Olympic, and Omega.
By 1987, Michael Hill had grown to 10 stores and listed on the New Zealand Stock Exchange that same year. The company also expanded into Australia, opening four stores within four weeks. By 2000, Michael Hill Jeweller operated 40 stores in New Zealand, 12 of which were in Auckland. In 2002, the company expanded into Canada, opening its first store in Vancouver, British Columbia. Michael Hill now operates in five Canadian provinces: British Columbia, Alberta, Saskatchewan, Manitoba, and Ontario.
In September 2008, Michael Hill made its first foray into the U.S. market by acquiring 17 stores in Illinois and Missouri from Whitehall Jewelers. By mid-2013, over 60% of the company’s sales came from Australia, with 20% from New Zealand and the remainder from North America. Emma Hill, Michael Hill’s daughter, took over as Chair after the Annual General Meeting in November 2015. However, in April 2018, the company closed its remaining nine stores in the U.S.
In April 2023, Michael Hill announced the acquisition of Australian jewelry chain Bevilles and its 26 stores for AUD 45 million. In 2024, the company appointed Miranda Kerr as its brand ambassador, further solidifying its brand presence.
