Zendaya and Tom Holland’s engagement has set the jewelry world abuzz, with the spotlight firmly on the east-west ring setting. Jewelers are thrilled to see this sleek and elegant style gaining momentum, and it’s already shaping up to be one of 2025’s biggest engagement trends.
After Zendaya debuted her engagement ring at the Golden Globe Awards on January 5, jewelry brands rushed to showcase their own east-west designs, using her name as a trending hashtag to attract future brides and grooms.
“Cookie-cutter engagement rings are out in 2025,” says Nadine Tacorian Arzerounian, head of design at Tacori. “An engagement ring should reflect personality and individuality, and Zendaya always embraces unexpected yet refined style choices.”
The east-west setting, where the gemstone is set horizontally, creates the illusion of a larger stone and carries echoes of Art Deco elegance. Designer Rachel Boston, known for incorporating this aesthetic, explains that the style dates back to the 15th century but was most prominent in the 1920s. Due to renewed interest, Boston’s brand has permanently added east-west designs to its white diamond collection.
Eliza Walter, founder of sustainable jewelry brand Lylie, agrees that modern couples are seeking rings that break from tradition. “The east-west setting enhances the gemstone’s natural beauty and gives it a contemporary edge,” Walter explains.
The trend isn’t just dominating high-end jewelry stores—online resale platforms have also seen a surge in interest. An eBay spokesperson confirmed that searches for east-west rings increased by 30% between December 2023 and December 2024. Notably, cushion-cut diamonds, like Zendaya’s, ranked among the top three best-selling gem styles on eBay last year.
While east-west settings are currently stealing the spotlight, Arzerounian predicts additional trends in 2025, including artisan-crafted rings, three-stone designs, and contemporary geometric cuts like carré and baguette diamonds. Split bands—either double or triple—are also expected to rise in popularity, adding a unique touch to engagement ring stacks.
With Zendaya’s influence setting the stage, will east-west engagement rings define 2025’s most sought-after bridal styles?
